Gone Blu-ray yet?

Blu-ray has been around for a while now – the players are getting better and the discs are getting cheaper, but I’m still not convinced that I need to be buying into it.

I watched The Dark Knight round a friends house a the weekend and I wasn’t blown away with the quality of it. Sure it was good, but it didn’t seem to be that much better than my standard definition set up of a Denon 1920 DVD Player, an Onkyo 606 amp and Panasonic AE700 projector. His set up consisted of an Optoma PJ, a Sony DG820 amp and a Sony BD-S350 Blu-ray player, which is pretty good by anyone’s standard o it can’t have been the equipment.

I feel I really should have invested into Blu-ray by now but I can’t seem to muster up the enthusiasm to do it. The players are certainly decent prices now with the Sony S350 I watched being £170 or so (although soon to be replaced by the S360 so may come down in price), and the latest Panasonic players being a bit more, but with more features. If I had to buy now, I think the Panasonic DMP-BD80 would be the one.

The discs are also coming down in price, especially online, where I have seen Blu-ray discs for around £10, admittedly not a new release but still almost acceptable.

Maybe it is the content – there hasn’t really been a killer film for me that I desperately want to watch in High Definition. When DVD first came out, there were a host of new films that were just begging to be broken free from their VHS shackles, such as The Matrix (which must have been many peoples first DVD).

For now I’ll keep reading the reviews on Home Cinema Buyer and waiting for that killer HD film to come out…
