WordPress 3 is out now – and it was a painless upgrade
I was working on one of my WordPress sites last night when I suddenly noticed the famous yellow banner appeared with the welcome text “WordPress 3.0 is available! Please update now” – so I thought, “What the heck”, and did as I was told – and it was completely painless!
I was actually upgrading a few plug ins at the time the familiar yellow banner appeared at the top of the page so it must literally have been launched, and I must have been one of the first sites to do the release upgrade. I’m normally one for leaving upgrades until they’ve been around for at least a few days just in case any un-squashed bugs make an unwanted appearance. But as I was working on a smaller site at the time, I thought what the heck, let’s try it now.
The actual upgrade took about 2 minutes, and it was completely painless. Nothing went wrong, all the plugins worked, the site appeared faster (I’ve not had a chance to test the speed yet), and in all honesty was a bit of an anti-climax! I was thinking I would have to disable a few plug ins, or tweak some of my custom code, but no, nothing.
Apart from the performance increase, there is little in the way of new features that I will immediately use, but things like the Post Type selector, and WordPress MU could come in handy in the future.
So I just wanted to say a huge congrats to everyone involved in the development, it has been a nice painless upgrade. I’ll blog again when I’ve upgraded my bigger sites – I’m hoping to see a nice speed increase with these.
